9 new October releases to add to your wishlist: werewolves, ghosts and romance, oh my
Even those who deny that spooky season begins on September 1st, no one can deny that October is official spooky season. In only a few days, October has brought the beginning of the leaves changing, a plunge in temperatures and a storm! It’s the ideal situation for curling up with a book so it’s time for some new releases!
I have some very highly anticipated (and pre-ordered…) non-fiction that I’ll be listening to on audio, a paranormal romance, a new adult romance from an old-school YA favourite, and even a spot of spiciness. I think it’s going to be a strong month of releases!
Three of these books I have pre-ordered in some form, and two I have proof copies of. Will I get them all read in October? Doubtful, but I’m eternally optimistic.
‘Mate’ by Ali Hazelwood
A Human hybrid and an Alpha Were claw against the bonds of fate in the highly anticipated companion novel to the Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller Bride.
I’m having a bit of a rough patch with Ali at the moment - I’ve soft DNFed ‘Not in Love’ and abandoned her new short story, ‘Hot for Slayer’, but I’m confident that I’ll be all in for fated-mates werewolves because I loved ‘Bride’, but I’m nervous.
‘Lore Olympus: Volume 9’ by Rachel Smythe
Scandalous gossip, wild parties, and forbidden love - witness what the gods do after dark in this stylish and contemporary reimagining of one of mythology's best-known stories.
Look, no I haven’t even started this series yet but I’m still excited for this because I have the first five volumes and I just know I’m going to love it. I just haven’t quite got to it yet, okay? Stop judging me.
‘Savage Blooms’ by ST Gibson
Wuthering Heights meets Sierra Simone in the new Celtic-inspired erotic fantasy romance from Sunday Times bestseller S.T. Gibson, author of the cult phenomenon A Dowry of Blood.
My reactions to ST Gibson’s books are very mixed, but there’s something about this one that is just screaming at me. We’ll be featuring this as a bonus podcast episode on our Substack in just a few weeks.
‘Bog Queen’ by Anna North
In Bog Queen, the lives of two young women separated by many centuries become inextricably connected, as each learns to harness their strange strengths in a landscape more mysterious than either can imagine.
I really loved ‘Outlawed’ by Anna North so I was thrilled to spot this as an upcoming title and I’m super excited to get stuck in. Also, that cover? Stunning.
‘Futility’ by Nuzo Onoh
For readers of Oyinkan Braithwaite's My Sister the Serial Killer and Bella Mackie's How to Kill Your Family, this is a monstrous, gleeful, bitingly funny tale of murder, body-swapping and bloody vengeance from the recipient of the Bram Stoker Award® for Lifetime Achievement and 'Queen of African Horror'.
Just give it to me. The cover, the summary, the comps - this is for me.
‘That’s a Great Question, I’d Love to Tell You’ by Elyse Myers
In That's a Great Question, I'd Love to Tell You, Elyse delivers a debut collection of deeply personal stories and hand-drawn illustrations, offering even more intimate reflections beyond what fans have seen on her social media.
Plus, tales involving bad dates and is-this-a-dates; the tempting yet futile urge to reinvent yourself, panic attacks and escape hatches, and favorite pens and systems to use them, all while loving and letting yourself be loved, preferably at the same time.
Like most of the internet, I love Elyse’s content so I’m super excited to get stuck into this. I’ll listen to this one via audio as Elyse reads it.
‘Overdue’ by Stephanie Perkins
Ingrid and Cory make the unorthodox decision to separate for a month to date other people, assuming that at the end of it, they'll reunite and start planning their nuptials. And Ingrid has the perfect man in mind for this relationship sabbatical--Macon Nowakowski, her cantankerous and completely adorable coworker for whom she's had a crush for years.
Stephanie Perkins was one of my facourite YA romance writers - ‘Anna and the French Kiss’ was my whole personality for a long while - and I’m really interested to see her write adult romance after a long time away from publishing (apart from a few thrillers and slashers).
‘Good Spirits’ by BK Borison
He's the Ghost of Christmas Past. But she's not exactly Scrooge… Hand in hand, they uncover each other’s pasts, but why is it that Nolan doesn’t want to let go? And might Harriet be the key to giving the Ghost of Christmas Past … a future?
I fell head over heels in love with ‘First Time Caller’ earlier in the year, so much so that I instantly pre-ordered this and I cannot wait. I’m a sucker for Christmas films, but not so much when it comes to books. This is absolutely going to be an exception.
‘When Gavin Met Stacey and Everything in Between’ by Ruth Jones and James Cordon
For the first time, go behind the scenes of the beloved TV show Gavin and Stacey with a funny and heartwarming tale of love and friendship from the BAFTA award-winning writers Ruth Jones and James Corden. This is a story about how Ruth and James turned their little show about ordinary life into a full-on cultural phenomenon.
I adore Gavin and Stacey and I’m looking forward to getting a behind the scenes sneak peek. This is another one that I’ll be listening to via audio, and it’ll probably make me want to do a full re-watch.
What releases are you excited for in October?
